Alex

Alex was a commercial fisherman when he got the first major work injury to his hand, and then in construction when he got the next one. No workers compensation, because both of his employers were friends and asked him not to report. Things slid down from there. He cycled through various encampments and supportive housing places for a while, and got kicked out of the last one after hanging a dollar store dart board on the wall. For the last two years, he has been living in a garden shed in the Western Communities in exchange for helping the homeowner with yardwork. “I’m like Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys,” he jokes. “It’s actually not too bad – there’s a wicker thing I sleep on, and I help the woman who owns the house with a lot of things. It’s cold in the winter, though.”
