Mar and her three children had subsidized housing for 15 years at $650 a month, but when the kids grew up and left home, she wasn’t allowed to stay in her three-bedroom apartment. And so she was out, with a shelter allowance that was even smaller than what she’d been paying and little hope of finding anything she could afford. She’s been homeless for more than four years now. “I get that I needed to give up my place, that it was another family’s turn to have it. But I thought I’d get some help to find a smaller place. But here I am with all my stuff, and bylaw has thrown out everything I have with wheels on it. Every time they come, which has been four times a day lately, I need to get two guys to help me move before bylaw can take even more.”
