Shaggy was the guy everyone in Port Hardy knew as the one who would climb the big Christmas tree outside Thunderbird Mall every year and attach the star at the very top. His cousin remembers him doing it in an air cast when he had a broken leg one year, and in a back brace another time. But that was probably 20 years ago now, and there hasn’t been a tree put up at the mall in almost that long anyway, Shaggy says. Shaggy lived homeless for a while in Port Hardy, and still knows the best places to tuck into to get out of the cold winds, like the one that was blowing as we talked in that same mall parking lot.
