That’s Gary’s Grade 1 report card he’s holding, class of 1969-70 at Cloverdale Elementary. He lost his ID and figures the report card could work as a substitute, “because who the hell else is going to have this except me?” Gary owned a local gym for 20 years until the pandemic shut that down. He lived out of the country for a while before coming home a couple years ago and discovering almost accidentally that he was actually pretty good at living outside, having done a lot of wilderness time with his dad as a kid. “It’s not just drugs down here, it’s community. You meet some incredible people here – good people, just caught in bad circumstance,” he says. Gary’s two adult children hate that he’s homeless, though. “My son wants to rescue me. But I don’t want to be rescued.”
