A memorial on Pandora for two people who died on the street recently has so far survived several days of bylaw sweeps. But the street community and outreach workers are seeking a more permanent place where people could sit for a while with their grief and memories of friends who have died out there. An informal group is taking shape to work on that, alongside outreach workers who want to ensure there’s a celebration of life for every person who dies homeless. There were 114 reported deaths of people living homeless in the Island Health region in 2023, up 54 per cent from the previous year (most recent figures – I’ve got calls out to government for updated numbers), but that doesn’t include the deaths of the people who were under a doctor’s care when they died.
