Sometimes plotting a rebellion looks like quiet conversation over tea and cookies. Three journalists, four community activists (one bowed out of the photo opp, one taking the photo!), all with personal stories and big outrage driving their activism around homelessness and the toxic drug crisis. Lots of plans started taking shape around the coffee table on how to dig deeper, crank up public awareness, and connect with all the other people out there fighting back against wrong-headed policy, bylaw sweeps, the criminalization of poverty and disability, and inhumane and ineffective “actions” that actually increase the harms for everyone in the community – most especially the people experiencing homelessness. May 2026 be one kickass year of setting things right.

I’m part of an informal group called Gang of Crones – we’re probably a bit older (on average) than this group but I think we’re much the same in intent and with the same underlying ethos (‘Why the f*ck are we back to this shit again – how loud do we have to shout it for the twats in the back of the room?). Maybe it’s the wave that most folks didn’t see coming that’s going to make the difference in 2026 (and beyond). Crone power!
