The wins go to the organized when you’re living on the street. Alex is a champion of getting packed up and outta there every morning with his impressive cart train before bylaw and police arrive to confiscate the possessions of anyone who doesn’t have his same hustle. Freezing out here this morning but at 1C at 7:30 am, not yet a cold enough night to have triggered the opening of emergency shelter beds. Police presence has been heavy on the Block this week as the department’s new Beat Team kicks in and it becomes clear what “engaging directly with residents” means for people living homeless. Harm reduction supplies were being confiscated and glass pipes stomped on as part of yesterday’s “engagement.”
