Nathan

Nathan had supportive housing downtown, but lost it after what he says was a dispute with staff over his buying of a replacement smoke detector and not having it mounted in the correct place. People in supportive housing are technically protected by the Residential Tenancy Act, but with key exemptions that in fact can lead to fast evictions for all kinds of reasons that wouldn’t be just cause in the regular rental world. Still, people are desperate to get in. But there are currently almost 10,000 people on the wait list for one of BC’s 15,789 units of supportive housing. Nathan says he really needs a worker to help him navigate the system and get housed again, but in the meantime, he’s tuning up his bylaw-avoidance skills. “I try to stay away from places where bylaw comes. It’s pretty brutal otherwise. I’ve lost so much stuff.”
