Georgia says her shelter allowance is still paying for a room in the social housing complex behind this blue fence, but she’s living on the sidewalk out in front of it right now. She feels safer, and less likely to end up in conflict with staff members who she doesn’t trust or like. Unlike most BC renters, people who live in this kind of short-term housing aren’t covered by the Residential Tenancy Act. They have no right to privacy in their rooms if staff want to enter, can’t have visitors, and have no path for complaints about the behaviours of other tenants.
