Alaina and Jim put the ubiquitous anti-homeless fencing to good use on a rainy day on the Block as a structure for draping a tarp to keep the rain out while they watch a show on Alaina’s phone. Alaina has lived homeless for 10 years off and on, the last five consecutively, and says she feels safer living homeless on Pandora – alongside both her parents – than she did living housed with a violent ex. Jim did “a lot of couch surfing” before ending up on the street a year ago. Both have mats in the basement of Our Place, which they can count on every night as regulars who always show up for the 7:30 pm opening. But they’ve got to be gone by 6:30 am, when Our Place opens for the day.
