Tasha & Jacqui

On a cold December day when the heavy and dangerous sedation of the unregulated, unknowable “down” supply takes you down hard on a freezing sidewalk along busy Bay Street, you need a good friend nearby to call your name over and over to wake you from your life-threatening stupor, hold your cart still so you can grab onto it and get to your feet, and cuddle you until you’re warmed up. Tasha and Jacqui were those kinds of friends for each other on this day. Tasha was two days out of the hospital after being treated for an infection and released back into homelessness, with a prescription for antibiotics that she wasn’t sure how she’d fill given that she can’t wheel herself more than a block.
