Keith had a job and a place to live in Cumberland a few years back, but by the time he got back from an operation in Vancouver to fix the eardrum he blew out in a long- ago diving accident, he’d lost both. “You can’t really be homeless in Cumberland, so I came here.” It seems like a sad turn in Keith’s story, but then he adds that he’s been homeless for most of the last 32 years, much of that in the Okanagan. “It was a lot easier to be homeless back in those days. You could still disappear,” he says. These days, Keith has found a quiet carport to sleep in that at least gives him some shelter from the winter rain.
