Maybe three times will be the charm, says Jennifer, who is waitlisted for Heartwood Women’s Treatment Centre in Vancouver. She has been through the 90-day program once before as well as a stint at a different treatment centre. Homeless off and on for three years – “I go by seasons” – the comfort of a good sleep on someone’s couch the night before reminded her just how much “I really don’t want to be out here anymore.” Her stepdad lives in Pemberton, far from the Block and maybe far enough to be done with the drugs for good if she moves there after treatment. Jennifer is a snowboarder who was constantly on the mountain when she was growing up in Campbell River, and she’s planning to use that as her substitute for drugs. She’s hopeful another time in treatment will be the ticket to finally getting a grip on the PTSD that set in after she endured leukemia treatment at age six. “The one bad thing about Heartwood is that it’s right at the hospital where I was being treated for leukemia. I get off the elevator and it’s right there, the area where I was. That’s a PTSD thing.”
