Hoon on outreach

Morning wakeup starts at 6:30 am for Solid outreach worker Hoon, who hits Pandora first and then heads to some of the outlying places where people are sheltering to get everyone awake and packing up before city bylaw crews arrive at 7 am. People get a sandwich, a bottle of water, and any harm reduction supplies they need, plus a friendly face and a bit of conversation to start the day. Hoon’s work is funded by the city, and he maintains a civil relationship with bylaw officers, who let him know the route they’ll be taking that day so he can get there first to help people not lose all their stuff. Hoon is known for knowing everyone who is out there – highly valued in a life where people go “missing” all the time. That’s especially a risk now that stepped-up bylaw enforcement has people constantly on the move.
