It’s been almost three and a half years since Krystle’s partner Billy was murdered in Saanich, still barely healed from a major brain injury he’d sustained in an earlier attack but then evicted from his supportive housing anyway. A few months later, on Valentine’s Day, Krystle got her own eviction notice at the same site. Don’t worry, the RCMP assured her, promising her a place would be found for the spouse of a murder victim. But no place ever was. Krystle has been homeless since then, drifting around the region for two years with no news of who killed Billy and terrified she’d be next. She had to wait seven months just to get her possessions back from her housing unit, only to find they’d been bagged up in a damp ball with her dog’s kibble and left to go moldy. Her dog – that’s another story. She was camping at Goldstream when she left the dog with another camper and they called Capital Regional District bylaw, who impounded the dog. Krystle did everything she could to get her dog back, but a few weeks later, they told her the dog had been put down. She’s still waiting for the ashes, still hoping it’s not true. “All I want is low-income housing with a bathtub, and to find out that my dog is alive with a bunch of puppies in some CRD puppy mill.”
