I talked with one fellow a while back whose moment came when he went back to jail for the umpteenth time and saw the same old regulars talking about “the same old shit,” and he realized he was done. For Steven, who had been living homeless and substance-dependent in Duncan four years ago, it took the form of “a radical encounter with Jesus” one night when he was at Lake Cowichan, when Jesus appeared in a vision and spoke Steven’s name. Steven is now married, expecting his first child, and working for a faith-based charity that’s new to the local scene, Hope Mission. Steven was driving the van around to shelters this weekend picking people up for an Easter supper at the Ukrainian hall.
