Angie

Five years homeless – Angie can hardly believe it, but at 65, she knows to worry about it big-time. “I sometimes think about having to die out here,” she says. “I don’t want to think of the pain of death and me not even able to be inside.” She’s learned a lot in these hard five years: how to discreetly cover herself while she pees in a takeout paper bowl because there’s no bathroom to be found; the quiet spot in the hospital emergency waiting room where a person can sometimes get in some peaceful hours inside before being told to move along. But mostly she’s learning that she’s so done with it. “Look at me – my bags all over the place, my food packed in with my underwear. I can’t be on the street much longer! I might have to give up on Victoria, the place where the richest of the rich and the poorest of the poor live. The place with so much judgement, where people are so rude to you.” Market rents are out of reach for anyone on income assistance, but Angie is keeping an eye out for a decent guy looking for a roommate. “If I could get with a guy I like, maybe we could share a place. I just want to get somewhere and sleep.”
