The big city cleanup on 900-block Pandora on June 11 felt very threatening when I first heard about it but actually turned out to feel kind of festive. The 120 or so people who typically call that block home are gathering with the City’s permission on the much nicer grassy median in the 1000-block, where there’s food, drink and even a pop-up overdose prevention site thanks to the many advocates who have stepped up for the day along with @doctorsforsaferdrugpolicy . Bylaw would have been all over people for sitting on that grass on any other day, but at least for one day, it’s all ok. Those are moms Lisa and Correne in the cool shirts, who both have daughters out here. And glory be, the city is taking down the hideous blue fencing, though it sounds like they’ll be putting it back up again after the cleanup. (Why?? It looks so much better with it gone!). A bylaw officer assured me that the memorial at the corner of Quadra and Pandora will be left alone. Taner, who started the memorial in December for his late girlfriend Haley, left a very emotional note there for bylaw just in case. It all feels like a very civil day out here for the most part, and having so many friendly eyes on the scene is likely part of that. But we’re all wondering: What will happen tomorrow?
