Gerry

Last time Gerry and I talked, he was playing a dice game with a friend on a sunny spring day. Now it’s October and the 69-year-old is heading into another hard winter on the street – his sixth since he got evicted after 15 years living in a little house for low-income seniors on Cedar Hill. He got tossed after changing a broken lock on his front door without permission, then caught out when emergency crews arrived at his unit for a wellness check and couldn’t get in. “I figured I’d just be moving to a new place after that, but here we are 5 years later. The rents just keep going up and up.” That stuff on his walker is all he’s got left now after numerous thefts. He got offered a longer term shelter bed, but knows he couldn’t handle how close he’d be sleeping to other people, not to mention the bedbugs. “At least you never have to worry about that on the street,” he notes.
