The informal memorial at the corner of Quadra and Pandora just keeps on getting more beautiful. My heart lifts every time I see that it hasn’t yet been torn down by bylaw officers – almost 11 months now, surely a record for longest standing street memorial. It started for a young woman who died last December right here on this corner, but so many other deaths have happened since then in the street community, and it feels like everyone out there finds comfort passing by and remembering Haley along with their own lost loved ones. I was chatting with Moe on this particular day as she hung out near the memorial. She says people on the block love to tend to the flowers, add new ones, and leave offerings of food, water and the occasional teddy bear for the spirits. A landscaper showed up on a recent day and added those big, bold plants at the top, she adds. “Everybody chips in. We try to add things to keep it seasonal. It’s important to remember.”
