Inner-city physician Dr. Jill Wiwcharuk says there’s no question that the single biggest help for people in poverty is to give them more money. She’s helping Ron complete the complicated forms that require a doctor’s signoff so he can get on disability benefits for the first time in his life, at age 63. Jill does the work through Coolaid’s REES program, but was used to much bigger teams of doctors doing this work in her Ontario days. Ron has been off and on homeless but for the past 18 months has found longer term shelter in group housing, My Place, where people get their own “pod” and aren’t required to give up their bed and clear out with all their stuff early every morning.
