Gene

That marketing sign outside the new condos on 900-block Pandora is looking more like irony by the day as enforcement against people living homeless ramps up to apparently new heights coming next month. “They literally push us off the block, but don’t want us anywhere else BUT this block,” says Gene. He had been sitting on his scooter under an umbrella that morning and ordered to move along because he was “sheltering.” See that different little stripe of brick directly under the Neighbour sign? That’s the latest no-go zone, designated off limits because a person can actually get out of the rain if they stand there. “We know the routine,” says Gene. “Bylaw and police pull up dragging that big garbage thing. They get in a line. And then they come for us, and go through everything we have, every portion of our bags. One time they pulled out a razor and cut the whole front flap of a tent I’d had for two days.”
