This Mayne Island boy is finding life on Pandora rougher with each passing day, but it’s not like there’s a lot of options. Samuel is trying to look at his 3 years on the Block as being about some life lesson he needs to learn, because otherwise “it’s just existing.” His uncle started Cobworks, building homes out of clay, sand and straw, and Samuel wonders if there’s a role for him building houses like that for the people stuck out there. There’s certainly construction knowledge on the street if it could be harnessed, he notes: “The stonemasons, the carpenters – so many awesome people here. Eighty per cent of these people built Victoria.” Asked what the public needs to know about the social crisis, Samuel says it’s that the millions being spent right now on “the problem” aren’t accomplishing anything, and in fact are making things much worse. “Give me one positive outcome for what they’re doing here. Tell me one thing that’s getting better. All I see is more crime, more violence, more theft.”
