The last time Stephanie and I talked, it was late December and she was a week away from losing her supportive housing after an arbitration hearing on her pending eviction went ahead while she was in hospital with a mental health crisis. The eviction was allowed and now she has been homeless on Pandora these past 5 months, after 15 years housed. “I’m in and out of hospital a lot now. I’m trying to at least get a mat at night, but all the noise in the shelters makes it hard for me. People keep saying to me, ‘Stephanie, you shouldn’t be out here!’ I agree, but what can I do?” People living homeless get judged for using drugs, she says, but when there’s not enough of anything people need – most especially housing – and constant bylaw seizures on top of it, “it’s easier to do drugs than to have to deal with all of the stuff you’re having to deal with.”
