Wheels

How do you roll? Turns out that’s a BIG question for people out there these days, because the only drop-in centre in the region for people who look noticeably poor and sick no longer allows them in if they’re pulling something on wheels. And if you can’t get in, you can’t eat, get out of the weather, use the bathroom or shower, because it’s the only place where all of that is readily available for people living homeless. But as the 70-year-old woman who owns this tidy package knows all too well after being turned away at the door, that’s one of those rules that flexes depending on who the person is who wants in, and who the person is making the decision. If you’re well-liked, maybe they overlook the wheels. If you’re not – sorry, lady. So then your only choice is to leave your worldly goods outside and risk bylaw taking them, or skip the shower and the food and go find a downtown bush or dumpster to hide behind while you pee. “These are my twilight years. I shouldn’t be living like this,” says the 70-year-old, whose luggage setup does double duty as a walker. “I’m working on trying to get better, but this is a death place.”
