Walk around the neighbourhoods where people live homeless and you’ll soon bump into people who are out there – often in their own recent sobriety – helping others in various ways or trying to get people into recovery. Here’s the latest people to appear, the brand-new local chapter of the Crazy Indians Brotherhood – from left, Travis, Shane, Water and Ian. They’re connected to a national movement of “brothers helping brothers” focused on supporting Indigenous men to leave lives of crime, violence and addiction. These four work alongside another peer outreach group, Lion’s Pride Recovery. “I’ve been sober two years in July,” says Shane, whose street name is Bullet. “I’ve sold a lot of dope on this block, done a lot of dirt. It feels good to be here giving back.” He’s an admin on the brotherhood’s Facebook page and gets some pretty sweet responses to his regular Weekly Wins posts, which asks “What was your small win this week?”
