David

This day here marks 1,185 days since David was last free of street opioids. It’s been that long since he last set a foot on carpet. Stepped into an actual house. Been welcomed at a family dinner. “I used to build homes for people, build dreams. I haven’t been inside one of those dreams in a long time,” he says. David has had big stretches of being in recovery – more than 17 years one time. But these days he’s tied to the Block even tighter, having to go to the pharmacy every hour to be witnessed taking his prescribed medications. “Fentanyl is still in my life, though a lot less of it,” says David. “These days, I’m using less than a point (0.1 grams) a day. Before I got on methadone and Kadian, I was using a point every 20 minutes.” Like so many others on the Block, David has become expert through hard experience at reviving people from opioid overdoses – 22 so far for him just in the past month. “I carry six narcan kits at all times. Some people might think that’s excessive. No, it’s not.”
