This couple just got some online profile following a series of images of a bylaw seizure of all their possessions, including a particularly sad one of an officer tipping their perfectly good tent into the dumpster. But Keith says that he and Jen have mostly figured out how to stay out of bylaw’s way, and that despite the recent trouble, he appreciates that bylaw maintains some order on Pandora. Jen is not quite so generous in her own view, recalling the time when bylaw officers took their bike and all the wheeled devices she and Keith counted on to be able to roll off to the city parks where overnight sheltering is allowed, leaving them unable to get there. “They want us to go to the parks, but then they make it impossible for us to get our stuff there,” notes Jen. She and Keith have been living homeless in Victoria for three years now but are hoping to be accepted at the new Bridge Street shelter, which allows couples – a rare thing in shelters and supportive housing. “We’ve been together over 20 years. We’re not going to sleep in different beds,” Jen says.
